IBA will install 10 proton therapy systems at nine different sites across Spain.
IBA has won a €217 million (over $229 million) contract with the Spanish Ministry of Health to install ten Proteus ONE proton therapy systems across Spain.
The installations will be completed at nine different sites, with multiyear maintenance to be negotiated at a later date.
RaySearch Laboratories partnered with IBA in the public tender and will install its oncology information system RayCare and treatment planning system, RayStation at the nine sites for €17.3 million (over $18 million) — its largest order to date.
"The decision to award the contract to IBA was based on the company meeting a range of criteria in order to meet the stringent standards of quality," Soumya Chandramouli, IBA's CFO told HCB News. "With our new state-of-the-art manufacturing facility and highly-qualified team we are looking forward to delivering this contract."
The Spanish Ministry of Health announced in 2021 that it would buy ten proton therapy systems using a donation of €280 million (over $295 million) from The Amancio Ortega Foundation, which has invested in modernizing Spain’s cancer detection and radiotherapy technology since 2015. The public tender was launched in July 2022 and included three rounds to determine which company was best suited to provide the solutions.
"At this stage things will continue to progress with the Ministry of Health and not with the individual hospitals," said Chandramouli "We can't comment on specifics with regard to timing as the 10 projects will not run simultaneously. Delivery of the systems will be staggered over the next few years."
RaySearch will begin installing its software in 2024, a process which will take place over several years. Like with IBA, a service contract has not been determined yet but is expected to be added at the time of delivery.
"The fact that all centers will use both RaySearch products will bring many synergies, both in terms of implementation and clinical practice of radiation therapy in Spain," said RaySearch founder and CEO Johan Löf in a statement.
The ten proton centers will be located at several locations in the country, including Basque Country, Catalunya, Galicia, Andalucía, Valencia, Madrid and Canary Islands.
