To improve confidence in point-of-care diagnoses of cardiovascular disease and other cardiac-related ailments, GE HealthCare has integrated its Caption AI software with its Vscan Air SL for real-time, step-by-step guidance in capturing ultrasound images of the heart.

Developed by Caption Health, which GE HealthCare acquired in early 2023, Caption AI allows inexperienced healthcare professionals to perform echocardiograms in doctors’ offices, the home, and other care sites, and diagnose at-risk patients early. It is equipped with Caption Guidance for real-time guidance on positioning and manipulating the transducer on a patient’s body; and Caption Interpretation, which automatically calculates ejection fraction.

Vscan Air SL’s single-crystal transducer technology, combined with GE HealthCare’s proprietary SignalMax and XDclear technology, enables users to capture images at high levels of depth, resolution, and sensitivity. The handheld, wireless ultrasound system is the latest version of the original Vscan platform, which debuted in 2010 as the first color, pocket-sized ultrasound device, and can be used for whole-body scanning.
"AI guidance has enormous potential in ultrasound due to its ability to guide experts and relatively new users in retrieving diagnostic-quality information to make timely and accurate decisions and get patients on the right path sooner,” said cardiologist Dr. Jordan Strom in a statement.

Vscan Air SL, released in August 2023, allows radiologists to expedite care decisions to help patients receive treatment plans right away, when time is of the essence. Clinicians can also access subscriptions that connect them to a suite of easy-to-use solutions for secure collaboration, image, and device management using Vscan Air + Digital Tools.

Caption AI ensures that diagnoses and care decisions are accurate with its AutoCapture function for optimizing scanning and Save Best Clip features to capture the best quality image from each view.

The company will showcase Vscan Air SL with Caption AI at the American College of Cardiology (ACC) Annual Scientific Session & Expo, from April 6-8, in Atlanta, alongside its CardioVisio for Atrial Fibrillation, a digital, patient-centric clinical decision support tool, which is incorporated with the most recent ACC guidelines.
